Education Outreach Programme

Parliament's Outreach Programme has been bringing Parliament to the regions since 2018. 

What is Parliament Outreach?

Outreach is a unique opportunity for schools to engage directly with Parliament in their own regions. It is recognised that many schools across Aotearoa face significant barriers in visiting Parliament. To help make Parliament more accessible to communities, the Outreach Programme brings Parliament to parts of the country where schools may not have the opportunity to visit in person.

During outreach, Parliament’s Education Team visits schools and hosts a parliamentary debate. The Education Team are accompanied by Members of Parliament (MPs) and bring a travelling debating chamber to create an authentic Parliament experience.

MP participation

Outreach is supported by a small group of MPs from across Parliament, who contribute to the debate and participate in a Q&A panel to answer students’ questions about working in Parliament.

All political parties in Parliament are invited to nominate members to participate in outreach. Outreach is a non-partisan initiative connecting students with the work of Parliament, and we aim to get cross-party representation on each of our regional visits.

Making Parliament more accessible is a real focus for the Education Team, and the Outreach program acts as a bridge between Parliament and the regions of Aotearoa New Zealand.
